Why, last July, did Belgian diplomacy refuse to accredit a certain Vincent Karega as Rwanda’s new ambassador to Belgium?

To find the answer, we have to go back a few years. Vincent Karega was, between 2011 and 2019, ambassador to South Africa. During his mission there, three men (two Belgians and a Rwandan dissident) lost their lives in suspicious conditions.

The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the deaths of the two Belgians. And, as long as it is in progress, Vincent Karega is not welcome in Belgium.

This subject is part of the #Rwanda Classified investigation, which delves into the heart of Paul Kagame’s repressive regime. An investigation carried out by 50 journalists, from 17 different media, including RTBF and our Belgian colleagues from Knack and Le Soir, all coordinated by the international network of investigative journalists Forbidden Stories.
